Falls, S.D. - Rev. Arthur N. Grorud, 81, died
Tuesday, February 13, 2001 at McKennan Hospice in
Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral
services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February
17, at Brandon Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.
Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery with Heritage
Funeral Home of Sioux Falls in charge of the
arrangements.
Arthur
Norman Grorud was born on November 18, 1919 in
Pierpont, S.D., the son of Oscar and Catherine
(Johnson) Grorud. He was baptized and confirmed at
Fron Lutheran Church in Roslyn, S.D. He grew up in
the Roslyn area and moved with his family to the
Lemmon, S.D. during the depression years. After his
father died in 1937, Arthur quit school for a time
to help his mother raise his younger siblings. He
graduated from Lemmon High School in 1939 and
returned to Aberdeen, S.D. to work.
On
June 22, 1941, Arthur was united in marriage to
Minnie Johnson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Aberdeen. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army Air
Corps, serving as a radar technician until 1945. He
entered Northern State Teachers College in 1946 and
graduated in 1949. That fall, Arthur entered Luther
Seminary at St. Paul. After graduating with a
bachelor of divinity degree, he was ordained in May
of 1952 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Aberdeen.
During
his years in the ministry, Arthur and Minnie served
parishes in Viking, 1952-54; Oklee, 1954-58;
Hingham, Mont., 1958-61; Pinehurst, Idaho, 1961-67;
Fairview, Mont., 1967-73; Centerville, S.D.,
1973-80; and Osborne, Kan., 1980-84. Upon
retirement, Arthur and Minnie moved to Lemars, Iowa
where he continued to serve in a number of interim
situations, including two years in Sioux Center,
Iowa. In September of 2000, the couple moved to
Sioux Falls.
Art
was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in
LeMars and through the years, served in many
leadership positions. He was also an active
Democratic party committeeman, a member of Rotary
and an active member of the Barbershop Chorus.
Survivors
include his wife, Minnie of Sioux Falls; a son,
Rev. Mark (Caryl) Grorud of Fremont, Neb.; a
daughter, Annette (Greg) Peterson of Brandon, S.D.;
five grandchildren; and other relatives.
Art
was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters,
Carol Grorud and Lorraine Suedmeier; and three
brothers, Rev. Orville Grorud, Rev. Milton Grorud
and one in infancy.
