Melvin Griffin, 89

Middle River - Melvin Griffin, 89, died Friday, February 16, 2001 at Elim Nursing Home in Fargo, N.D.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20, at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Rev. John Jorgensen officiating. Gloria Ness was the organist, and Rosemarie Johnk was the soloist. Casketbearers were Randy Rose, Randy Burrell, Steve Holmes, Bobby Nelson, Kenny Beito, Clayton Troskey, Neil McGlynn and Danny Veselka. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Middle River with Collins Funeral Home of Middle River in charge of the arrangements.

Melvin Wallace Griffin was born on October 18, 1911, the son of Myron and Margaret (Buckley) Griffin, in Dickey county of North Dakota near Ellendale. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Ellendale High School. In 1934, he came to Thief River Falls where he helped his cousin, Dr. Orrin Lynde. In 1939, he purchased a farm in Cedar township of Marshall county near Middle River. The following year, Melvin built a home there.

On September 29, 1941, he was united in marriage to Alice Silverness at Bethlehem Lutheran Church near Newfolden. Melvin was a dairy farmer until his retirement in 1973. Alice died June 19, 1981.

He especially enjoyed playing pinochle with his friends, and his hobbies included rug hooking, bird watching and vegetable gardening.

Melvin is survived by three daughters, Rena (Ted) Sarzetakis of Athens, Greece, Sylvia (Richard) Anderson of Edgewater, Md. and Susan (Bernard) McKigney of Moorhead; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Wanek of Pierre, S.D. and Mary (Frank) Dixon of Aberdeen, S.D.; a brother, Ralph (Mavis) of Mt. View, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; two brothers, Ted and Everett; and two sisters, Alice Gerdon and Evelyn Hoffman.
