Leslie Getchell, Jr., 79

Park Rapids - Leslie Getchell, Jr., 79, died on Sunday, April 20, 2003 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 23 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with the Rev. Harvey Kietzman officiating. Casketbearers were grandchildren: Shane Nelson, Harvey Moseng, Jr., Nathaniel Mackay, Rusty Mackay, Tami Nelson and Michelle Hunt. Honorary casketbearers were grandchildren: Laura Moseng, Leslie Kruft, Scott Fritz, Lori Goebel, Jerome Iverson, Morris Sliger, Paul Mackay, Jr., and Leslie's great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. Interment was in the Getchell Family Plot at the Glenwood City Cemetery.

Leslie Garfield Getchell, Jr. was born on September 14, 1923, the son of Leslie, Sr. and Margaret (Smith) Getchell. His mother died when Leslie was two years old. Later, his father married Laura Pearson, who helped raise Leslie. As a child, he moved to the communities of Hoffman, Kensington, Herman and Glenwood. He attended schools in these communities and graduated from Elbow Lake Public School.

On April 3, 1944, he married Lucille Helen Michaels in Webster, S.D. He began farming in the Glenwood area. He also drove school bus and worked as a switchman for the Soo Line Railroad. In 1955, they sold the farm and moved to Minneapolis, where he worked for the Chicago Great Western Railroad. They returned to Glenwood and Leslie resumed farming. He also started his own trucking operation, which he was actively involved in for many years.

After Lucille's death in 1975, Leslie moved to Nevis, where he operated a hobby farm and continued to run his trucking company until his retirement in 1991. Leslie loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved animals of all kinds, and enjoyed planting his vegetable garden, which he shared with his family, friends and special friend, Patty Neft. He liked to keep busy with carpentry work and did all of his own mechanical work. Leslie loved his family.

Survivors include four daughters, Katherine (David) Rutherford of Park Rapids, Kay (Buzz) Nelson of Thief River Falls, Korene (Paul) Mackay of St. Cloud, and Margaret (Harvey) Moseng of Redwood Falls; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 11 great great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Leslie was preceded in death by his wife; his son, Kenneth; his daughter, Karen; his parents; his step-mother; and an infant grandson. A00003B2003AR30
