Helen Garthus, 86

Newfolden - Helen Garthus, 86, died Thursday, August 30, 2001 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls. Garthus Obit

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 4, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt with Rev. Nancy Werner officiating. Brenda Lunke was the organist, and the soloist was Don Lunke. Casketbearers were grandchildren Jody Lunke, Leone Johnson, Barbara Garthus, Miles Garthus, James Garthus, Wayne Garthus, Dean Garthus, Lowell Engen, Donald Engen and Steven Engen. Honorary casketbearers were her great-grandchildren and friends. Interment was in Holt Cemetery in Holt with Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls in charge of the arrangements.

Helen Monson was born on March 27, 1915 in Holt, the daughter of Ludwig and Christine (Reierson) Monson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended school in Holt. Helen worked on the family farm until her marriage to Bernard "Ben" Garthus on June 22, 1934 in Thief River Falls. The couple farmed throughout their lifetimes, and Helen also helped area farmers pick potatoes during several harvests and was employed at the turkey plant in Thief River Falls for 15 years. Bernard died on May 20, 2000.

Helen was a lifelong member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and Esther Circle.

She enjoyed embroidery, word find puzzles, flowers, gardening, baking bread and especially spending time with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Engen of Thief River Falls; two sons, Jay (Carol) of Middle River and Kenneth of Newfolden; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gerinda "Gerry" Nelson and Lida Inman, both of Thief River Falls.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Joe in 1965; her parents; a daughter-in-law, Janet Garthus; and a brother, Edward.
