Richard Frodahl was born in Shevlin on February 18, 1918, the son of Hartvick and Annie (Komanstad) Frodahl. Max attended high school in Goodridge. He joined the Navy in 1940. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theater and later in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1960.

After retiring, they traveled throughout the United States. They spent many winters in Texas and summers in Cambridge and later in Mora. Max loved gardening and prided himself on his yard and in finding unusual flowers for their gardens. Max kept up with current events by reading newspapers and watching television.
