Thief
River Falls - Max Fortier, 72, died Monday,
January 14, 2002 at his home in Thief River Falls.
Mass
of Christian burial will be
held
at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 17, at St. Bernard's
Catholic Church in Thief River Falls with Monsignor
Roger Grundhaus officiating. Kristi LaSalle will be
the organist. Casketbearers will be his
grandchildren: Tamra Knutson, Jeremiah Vad,
Jennifer Vad, Rebecca Mooney, Jacqueline Mooney,
Kendra Mooney, Andrew Fortier and Michael Fortier.
Interment, with military honors accorded by
Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117 and VFW
Post 2793, will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery in
Thief River Falls.
Visitation
will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday,
January 16) at Green Funeral Home in Thief River
Falls. Rev. Robert Dahlen will officiate at the 7
p.m. prayer service. Visitation will also be held
for one hour prior to services at the church.
Max
Edward Fortier was born on January 8, 1930 in
Grafton, N.D., the son of Alfred and Adeline
(Tandeski) Fortier. He was baptized in the Catholic
faith in Drayton, N.D. and confirmed at St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Warroad. He served in the U.S.
Army in active duty in the Korean Conflict from
January 16, 1951 to October 16, 1952 and was
awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze
Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and a
Presidential Unit Citation. Max achieved the rank
of corporal and served in the Army Reserves from
1952 until 1956.
On
August 27, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lois
Marie Heinen at St. Mary's Catholic Church in
Warroad. The couple made their home in Eveleth. Max
was employed by Marvin Lumber in Warroad and as a
lineman for Northern Electric Co-op in Virginia for
15 years. In May 1970, the family moved to Roseau
where Max farmed until his retirement in 1996. Max
and Lois then moved to Thief River Falls where they
had since resided.
He
was a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
Max
enjoyed hunting, fishing, mechanics and especially
visiting with family and friends and singing to his
family.
Survivors
include his wife, Lois of Thief River Falls; two
daughters, Valerie (Kenneth) Mooney of Thief River
Falls and Laurie (Lynn) Vad of Goodridge; two sons,
Brian (Beth) Fortier of Goodridge and Max Fortier
Jr. of Detroit Lakes; eight grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; five sisters, Lorraine Otto of
Big Sandy, Mont., Irene Lindgren, MaryAnn Brewster
and Jeanette (Chancy) Cole, all of Warroad, and
Louise (Howard) Lund of Roosevelt; a sister-in-law;
and many nieces and nephews.
Max
was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,
Daniel Fortier and Kenneth Fortier; three
brothers-in-law; and a nephew.
