Esther Flatland, 89

Fosston - Esther Flatland, 89, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at First Care Nursing Home in Fosston.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, at Sand Valley Lutheran Church in Trail with Rev. Michael Sletto officiating. Casketbearers were Scott Flatland, Jeffrey Flatland, Jon Flatland, David Flatland, Mark Flatland, and Scott Flatland Jr. Interment was in Lund Lutheran Cemetery in Gully with Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston in charge of the arrangements.

Esther Constance Jensen was born on May 30, 1912 in Eidsvold, Norway, the daughter of Christian and Anna (Otteson) Jensen. She immigrated to the United States with her parents when she was two weeks old. Esther attended Sunnyside School in Queen Township.

Esther was united in marriage to John Flatland on February 11, 1934 in Thief River Falls. The couple farmed near Gully until 1946 when they moved to their farm near Trail. John Flatland died in 1969, and Esther moved to Fosston in 1972.

Survivors include eight grandsons; four step-grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 11 great great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Louella Flatland of Castle Rock, Colo. and Gloria Flatland-Dziengel of Kennedy; a son-in-law, Orvin Grundyson of McIntosh; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Esther in death were her husband; her parents; two sons, Marvin and Joney; a daughter, Adeline; four brothers, John, Ole, Arthur, and Rudolph; and three sisters, Alpha, Evelyn, and Lillie.
