Hilmen Flaten, 84

Portland, N.D. - Hilmen Flaten, 84, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002 at Union Hospital in Mayville, N.D.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Little Forks Lutheran Church at rural Hatton, N.D. Interment was in Little Forks Cemetery, rural Hatton, with Bilden Funeral Home of Hatton in charge of the arrangements.

Hilmen Flaten was born on October 23, 1917, at rural Hatton, N.D., the son of Ole and Elvina (Stevning) Flaten. He grew up in the Hatton community, was baptized and confirmed at Little Forks Lutheran Church, and attended a rural school in Viking Township.

Hilmen served in the United States Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945.

On August 29, 1948, he married Ella Nyhus at Moorhead. The couple lived in Portland, N.D., and Hilmen worked for the International Harvester Company in Mayville. In 1951, the couple moved to Minnesota, residing at Highlanding and Plummer where Hilmen farmed and worked for the Soo Line Railroad. In May of 1970, they returned to the Mayville/Portland area, and Hilmen worked for Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement.

He was a member of the Little Forks congregation, Hatton American Legion, and Mayville VFW.

Survivors include his wife, Ella; three sons, Larry (JoAnn) and David (Dorothy), both of Hatton, and Dale of Portland; two daughters, Irene (Ronnie) Teigland of East Grand Forks and Karen (Steve) Amundson of Portland; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Kenneth (Alpha) of Sharon, N.D., Ernest (Elaine) of Hatton, Marlin (Solveig) of Portland, and Ardell (Marcella) of Klemme, Iowa; and a sister, Arlene (Ted) Pederson of St. Cloud.

Preceding Hilmen in death were his parents; five brothers, Melvin, Clarence, Russell, Ellerd, and Edwin; and four sisters, Julia, Hilda, Doreen, and Olga.
