Gladys Ewing, 86

Thief River Falls - Gladys Ewing, 86, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001 at her home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 11 Ewing, Gladys Obit -color a.m. on Monday, April 16, at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Dan Horn officiating. Musicians included Barb Hauger, organist; Reid Froiland, pianist; and Laura Ewing, cellist. Anne Ewing presented special music, and Jim Ewing delivered the eulogy. Casketbearers were Orin Green, Phil Hess, Cal Lindberg, Bob Reeve, Verne Spengler, Bob Bredeson, John Bornholdt, Ted Helle and Orville Stock. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys Johanna Melby was born on February 28, 1915 at Oklee, the daughter of Ole O. and Gertrude (Nesland) Melby. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Oklee. She attended school and high school at Oklee. After graduating from Bemidji State Teacher's College, Gladys taught in a one-room schoolhouse at Blackduck.

On June 17, 1939, she was united in marriage to J.Weir Ewing in Minneapolis. The couple lived in Oklee were Gladys' husband practiced dentistry. In 1945, they moved to Thief River Falls where Gladys worked beside her husband in his dental practice for many years. After Dr. Ewing died on September 9, 1994, Gladys continued to make her home in Thief River Falls.

She was an active member of United Methodist Church. Also, she was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader and held memberships in the Lincoln High School Foundation and Endowment Fund at Northland Community and Technical College.

Gladys is survived by a daughter, Carole (William) Pariseau of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sons, James (Anne) of St. Cloud and Ron (Mary) of Vienna, Va.; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Alice Boyd of Silver Springs, Md. and Jeanie Anderson of Minnetonka; a brother, Harold Melby of Minnetonka; and a sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Tom Melby and Orlo Melby; and two sisters, Katherine Gull and Verna Melby. A00003B2000AP18
