Eloise Espe, 92

Erskine - Eloise Espe, 92, died on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Pioneer Memorial Care Center.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston with the Rev. Randy Smith and the Rev. David Super officiating.

Eloise Carlson was born in Thief River Falls on September 19, 1910, the daughter of Oscar W. and Nora M. (Johnson) Carlson. She grew up in Thief River Falls, was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1928. She then worked at the George Peter and Son Grocery Store in Crookston.

On November 18, 1934, she was united in marriage to Vernon Espe. The couple made their home in Crookston. Eloise became matron and cook at the Polk County Jail during the time that her husband was the Polk County Sheriff. Vernon died in 1957. Eloise then worked for Minnesota State Employment Services before going to the Register of Deeds Office. She later became the Deputy Register of Deeds and retired in 1976. In semi-retirement, she was employed by Strander Abstract of Crookston until 1984. As an active member of the community, she organized the Mother's Club of the Drum and Bugle Corps and chaperoned on many trips. She also served as chair of the Bethesda Hospital Auxiliary during the construction of the hospital. She was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, the Polk County Cancer Society, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Sons of Norway.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (Duane) Arness of Maple Lake and Carolyn "Dyno" Selmanson of Union Lake; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a cousin and several other relatives.

Elois was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; a son-in-law, Wally Selmanson; her parents; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Espe.
