Emelia
Alma Engstrom was born on January 29, 1914 in the
Ringbo community in East Valley Township of
Marshall County, the daughter of Ole P. and Alma
(Johnson) Saxberg. She was raised and attended
country school in East Valley Twp. After her
schooling, she worked on the family farm. She also
did housekeeping, worked at the Land O' Lakes plant
in Thief River Falls, and worked for her aunt,
Hulda Betting at the Blue Moon Café in
Minneapolis. Emelia married Hughey Engstrom in 1947
at the Saxberg family farm. They made their home in
East Valley Twp. where they farmed. Their two
children, David and Sonia, were born while they
lived on the farm. In 1956, Hughey took a job with
the Minnesota Highway Department and the family
lived in Halma and Hallock before moving to Warren
in 1959. In 1961, Millie took a job in the dietary
department of the Warren Community Hospital. Hughey
was killed in a hunting accident in 1963. Millie
continued to make her home and raise her children
in Warren. She retired from her job at the age of
73 in 1977. Emelia moved to the Good Samaritan
Center in 2001.
Millie
was a natural born caregiver of others. She and
Hughey welcomed Millie's mother into their home
when her health failed in the early 1950s. After
Hughey passed away, his mother lived with Millie
and the kids until her death in 1968. Millie also
cared for her brother Melvin when he faced health
problems. She shared her home with her
sister-in-law, Selma, for about ten years from the
late '80s to the late '90s.
She
was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Millie loved the Lord Jesus and her church.
Millie
was a great cook who loved to bake, especially
blueberry pies with blueberries that she picked
herself. She had a gift for making things grow. She
also enjoyed reading, shopping trips with her
friends to Grand Forks, following the Minnesota
Twins and doing embroidery. She also treasured her
quilting days with her friends. Millie especially
enjoyed the thirteen winters she spent with her
daughter in South Texas.
Survivors
include two children, Sonia Engstrom of Mission,
Texas and David Engstrom of Fargo, N.D.; two
sisters-in-law, Selma Engstrom of Idaho Falls,
Idaho and Alice Saxberg of Fresno, Calif.; her
nieces and nephews, cousins and special friend,
Luise Jorgenson of Warren.
She
was preceded in death by her husband; her parents;
an infant sister and her brothers, Elvin, Arthur
and Melvin.
