Wayne Elgin, 73

Mesa, Ariz. - Wayne S. Elgin, 73, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix.

Memorial services were held on Friday, March 29, in Mesa, Ariz. and interment with military honors took place on Tuesday, April 2, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Honorary casketbearers included Newell Cederholm, Ken Kammen, Jeff Peterson, Andy Roskos, Marv Schiffler, and Sam Wolvert.

Wayne S. Elgin was born on December 12, 1928 in Badger, the son of Charles and Leona (Dowhower) Elgin. He graduated from Badger High School in 1946 and worked in Alaska before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1948. While in the Army, Wayne served as a personal chauffeur to the commanding officers at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, Colo. and at the Minnesota Military District in St. Paul.

In 1951, he married Eunice Peterson of Badger. Wayne farmed in Badger and also held retail management positions in Thief River Falls and Alexandria. From the late 1960s through the early 1980s, he was a radio communications officer with the Minnesota State Patrol, serving in Thief River Falls, Marshall, and St. Cloud. In 1981, he became a drivers license examiner for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in St. Cloud. Wayne retired in 1991. After traveling extensively throughout the United States and Canada by RV with his wife, Eunice, the couple moved to Mesa, Ariz.

Wayne enjoyed traveling and playing his drums in a variety of musical groups. He performed at Hostfest, a Scandinavian festival in Minot, N.D. in 1998 and 1999, and enjoyed entertaining senior citizens in Mesa. He also enjoyed storytelling and spending time with family and friends. In his earlier years, Wayne played high school and semi-professional basketball and raced snowmobiles with his family throughout the northern U.S.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice; a daughter, Karlyn (Mel) Moore of Silverado, Calif.; three sisters, Hazel (Garlin) Stromsmoe and Rema (George) Hanestad, both of Thief River Falls, and Donna (Carl) Gustafson of Mesa, Ariz. and Aberdeen, S.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Herl, Clifford, and Lewis; and two sisters, Ethel Carlson and Eunice Gansauge. A00003B2002AP03
