Dale Dunning, 69

Thief River Falls - Dale Dunning, 69, died Saturday, April 7, 2001 at his home in Thief River Falls.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Dunning Obit today (Wednesday, April 11) at the United Metho-dist Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Robert Dahlen officiating. Judy Hogberg will be the organist, and Mia Zutz will be the soloist.

Dale John Dunning was born on February 15, 1932 in Dayton, the son of Millard and Evelyn (Gonyea) Dunning. He was baptized in the Catholic faith. He attended Dunning School through the eighth grade and graduated from Edison Minnetonka High School in 1950. After high school, he worked on the ore boats on Lake Superior.

On April 4, 1951, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Minneapolis. He served as a mechanic in the Seebees for two years in North Africa and for 16 months in the Caribbean before his honorable discharge.

Dale then attended St. Cloud State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earning his teaching certificate in 1959. He moved to Thief River Falls where he taught at Lincoln High School and Franklin Middle School for 32 years. He also coached wrestling. in 1960, he was united in marriage to Patricia Ledin.

He was a member of the Eagles, American Legion, Pennington County Historical Society and Elks.

Dale was an avid trapper, fisherman, hunter and enjoyed spending his time at his cabin near Fourtown. He also enjoyed collecting golf balls, making wine and was an amateur butcher and furrier.

Survivors include three daughters, Laura Dunning of Middle River, Kara Dunning of International Falls and Alice (Kelly) Dahl of Newfolden; special friend, Lois Hoaas of Thief River Falls; six grandsons; a sister, Nola (Rev. Don) Martin of Hutchinson; a brother, Myrle (Marvel) Dunning of Champlin; and several nieces and nephews.
