- James Dahlen, 81, died Sunday, March 25, 2001
at Roseau Area Hospital in Roseau.
Funeral
services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March
29, at Rose Lutheran Church, rural Roseau, with
Rev. Larry Severson officiating. Debbie Erickson
was the organist, and vocalists were Tom Fugleberg
and Shelly Aubey. Casketbearers were Greg and Mike
Dahl, Mark and Dick Robinson, Dennis Smedsmo and
Elhue Castle. Interment was in Moe-Rose Cemetery,
rural Roseau, with military honors provided by the
Roseau Memorial Honor Guard. Gieseke Funeral Chapel
of Greenbush was in charge of the
arrangements.
James
Arville Dahlen was born on June 2, 1919 in Roseau,
the son of Martin J. and Jennie (Rendahl) Dahlen.
He was baptized and confirmed at Moe Lutheran
Church of Roseau. He attended school in District
49E at Roseau. In 1938, he graduated from Roseau
High School where he lettered in basketball. James
attended business college at Fargo, N.D. and
aircraft maintenance school at Kansas City. In
1941, he joined the Army Air Corp and served in the
United States and Europe. Following his discharge
at Camp McCoy, Wisc., he farmed the family
homestead in Spruce township near Roseau. He
attended agricultural classes taught by his close
friend, Howard McNutt.
On
December 9, 1950, James married Florence Drown at
St. Paul. The couple lived on the farm until 1955
when they moved to Minneapolis where James worked
as an airline mechanic for Northwestern
Aeronautical. He worked for Braniff Airlines and
was licensed airframe and power plant. He was
transferred to Love Field in Dallas, Texas and
worked there for 24 years until his retirement in
1981. In 1986, James and Florence moved to Bagley,
residing there until 1989 when they moved to a farm
at Roseau. In 1998, the couple moved to Summerfield
Place in Roseau.
James
was a life member of the American Legion, Veterans
of Foreign Wars and Military Order of the Cooties
and enjoyed participating in these clubs'
activities at Veterans Administration
hospitals.
James
is survived by his wife, Florence; a son, James
(fiancee Darlene Neiss and boys, Justin and Ryan)
of Carthage, Miss.; a special adopted daughter,
LeAnn Sutherland (son Jason Hamilton) of Roseau;
several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a
sister, Elsie (David) Haste of Arcadia, Calif.;
several nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law; and a
brother-in-law.
He
was preceded in death by his parents.
