Cota, 80
Red
Lake Falls - Medi Cota, 80, died Wednesday,
March 14, 2001 at his rural Red Lake Falls
home.
Mass
of Christian burial was held at 2 p.m. on Monday,
March 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red
Lake Falls with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Polly
Beyer was the organist, and special music was
provided by St. Joseph's Church Choir.
Casketbearers were Buckley Cota, Cory Kliner, Phill
Millette, Lance Cota, Brad Cota and Coty Johnson.
Military honors were accorded by the U.S. Military
Honor Guard. Interment was in St. Dorothy's
Catholic Cemetery at Dorothy. Johnson Funeral
Service of Red Lake Falls was in charge of the
arrangements.
Medi
Cota was born on March 7, 1921 at Crookston, the
son of Napoleon and Emelda (Huot) Cota. He grew up
in the Crookston area and attended a rural school.
On October 9, 1942, he entered the U.S. Marines and
served during World War II at Cape Gloucester,
Peleliu and Okinawa. Following his honorable
discharge on December 13, 1945, he returned to the
area.
On
November 17, 1948, he was united in marriage to
Esther A. Armstrong at Dorothy. The couple
purchased a farm near Dorothy and farmed there.
Medi worked at Detroiter Mobile Home in Red Lake
Falls for many years and at American Crystal in
Crookston for many years, retiring in
1986.
Medi
was a lifetime member of St. Dorothy's Catholic
Church until its closing and since had been a
member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake
Falls. He was also a member of the Red Lake Falls
American Legion Post, and he and his wife, Esther,
served as foster parents for more than 30
babies.
He
enjoyed playing cards, gardening, attending
auctions, working with horses, working in his yard
and especially spending time with his
family.
Medi
is survived by his wife, Esther Cota of Red Lake
Falls; four sons, Ross (Roxanne) Cota of Red Lake
Falls, Les (Donna) Cota of St. Hilaire, Jay
(Janice) COta of Belton, Mo. and Dean COta of
Bismarck, N.D.; five daughters, Bonnie (John)
Kliner of Harden, Mont., Lois (Tom) Millette of
East Grand Forks, Norma (Jim) Johnson of Rock
Springs, Wyo., Irene (Ira) Patnode of Red Lake
Falls and Joyce (Steve) Larson of Newfolden; 31
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four
sisters, Mabel (Harvey) Mercil, Sister Raphael Cota
and Mildred Vilven, all of Crookston, and Leda
(George) Weiland of Euclid; and three brothers,
Adelore Cota and Edward (Cherie) Cota, both of Red
Lake Falls, and Leo (Lorraine) Cota of St.
Hilaire.
He
was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,
Lyzum Cota and Henry Cota; and three sisters, Celia
Guzek, Viola Fitzsimmons and Sister Emilda
Cota.
