Leo Cota, 71

St. Hilaire - Leo Cota, 71, died on Tuesday, October 15, 2002 at the CNC Unit of the Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Friday, October 18 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Tim McGee officiating. Kristi LaSalle was the organist and Shelly Burkel was the soloist. Casketbearers were Edward Currie, Duane Currie, Forrest Hamm, Ross Cota, Roger Cota and Alan Cota. Interment was in St. Dorothy Catholic Cemetery in Dorothy.

Leo Cota was born on February 9, 1931, the son of Napoleon and Emelda (Huot) Cota in Crookston. He was baptized into the Catholic faith and attended County School near Crookston.

From 1951 to 1953, he served during the Korean Conflict. On June 27, 1961, Leo was united in marriage to Lorraine Currie in Dorothy. The couple lived near Dorothy for 14 years before moving to St. Hilaire in 1978. Leo worked for Vigen Construction in East Grand Forks for 38 years building elevators.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, raising pigs and chickens and playing cards. Leo loved spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of the American Legion in Red Lake Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of St. Hilaire; children, Barbara (Gary) Gebauer of Thief River Falls, Marlene (Roger) Flaten of Thief River Falls, Virgin of Thief River Falls, Kevin of St. Hilaire and Michelle Cota of St. Hilaire; four grandchildren; two brothers, Edward and Aldore Cota; and five sisters, Alice Sirek, Mabel (Harvey) Mercil, Sister Raphael, Leda (George) Weliand and Mildred Vilven.

Leo was preceded in death by an infant son, Randy and son, David; his parents; brothers, Lyzum, Henry and Medi; and sisters, Celia Guzek, Viola Fitzimmons and Sr. Emelda Cota. A00003B2002OT23
