River Falls - Helen Christensen, 93, died
Wednesday, July 4, 2001 at Oakland Park Nursing
Home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral
services were held at
10:30
a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2001 at Zion Lutheran
Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Gary Johnson
officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and the
soloist was Diane Johnson. Casketbearers were Tom
Amren, Ronnie Bakke, Kermit Benson, Bob Hilligoss,
Dr. James Terrian, Glenn Wedul, Maynard Wedul,
Strand Wedul, Bernard Wilson, John Wilson and Bee
Yang. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief
River Falls with Green Funeral Home in charge of
the arrangements.
Helen
Josephine Jacobson was born on August 17, 1907 in
Thief River Falls, the daughter of Hans H. and
Jennie (Berg) Jacobson. She was baptized on
September 15, 1907 and confirmed on June 19, 1921
by Rev. George Larson at Zion Lutheran Church. She
attended school in Thief River Falls, graduating
from Lincoln High School. Following high school,
Helen attended teacher's training for a year and
also attended Moorhead State Teachers College for a
short time. She taught in rural schools in
Pennington and Marshall counties for 11 years. From
1953 to 1960 she also worked at the Hartz
Store.
On
October 23, 1938, Helen was united in marriage to
Oscar Wedul. He died in 1949. On May 1, 1960, she
married Edwin Christensen in Bemidji. He died in
1994.
Helen
was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was
a Sunday school teacher, member of Dorcas Circle,
served on the board of Lay Ministries for three
years and the board of Evangelism for five years.
She was also a member of the Retired Teachers
Association.
Survivors
include her grandchildren, Aaron Wedul of Thief
River Falls and Sara Wedul of Denver, Colo.; a
daughter-in-law, Kay (Douglass) Steiger of Thief
River Falls; two stepdaughters, Betty (Chester)
Jorde and Donna (Lysle) Martinson, both of Thief
River Falls; four stepsons, Dale (Marilyn)
Christensen of Lodi, Wisc., Robert (Joyce)
Christensen of Thief River Falls, Dean (Joan)
Christensen of Catalina, Ariz. and Gerald (Ann)
Christensen of Chicago, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; 34
great-grandchildren; four great
great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Bakke of
Thief River Falls, Margaret Amren of Cloquet,
Katherine Travnicek of Warroad and Lorraine (Steve)
Brown of St. Paul; a brother, Kermit (Betty)
Eastman of St. Cloud; many nieces and nephews; and
her extended families, the Krepp and Yang
families.
She
was preceded in death by her son, Jerry, on March
10, 1983; her parents; her husbands; three sisters,
Alice Eastman, Gladys Erickson and Violette
Jacobson; and three brothers, Joe Norman, Edwin
Jacobson and Gordon Eastman.
