Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Vergas with Rev. Barbara Bolz and Rev. Tom Mitchell officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Vivian was born on September 24, 1914, the daughter of Carl and Selma (Eklund) Peterson in St. Vincent. She grew up in Crookston, where her father was employed by the Great Northern Railroad. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1932. After graduation, she was employed as a telephone operator in Holt.

On June 3, 1934, Vivian was united in marriage to Harold Saastad. The couple lived in Thief River Falls. In 1960, they moved to Vergas and lived there until Harold's death in 1973.

On November 3, 1974, Vivian married Gordon Chaffee. The couple lived in Crookston until Gordon's retirement from Crystal Sugar Company, after which, they returned to Vergas.

Vivian loved caring for her friends and family. She was active in Bible studies and mission circles at the churches she attended. She was president of the Women's Mission Circle at the Frazee Baptist Church. During Gordon's retirement, the couple toured the United States. After Gordon's death, Vivian's son, Jerry, helped her assemble her writings and created a book called "Vivian's Memoirs," which was published in Fargo, N.D. in 1998. Vivian moved to Vergas Assisted Living in July, 1999, where she has since resided.

Survivors include a son, Jerrold (Carol) of Moorhead; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold (Elma) Peterson of Minneapolis; stepchildren, Mark (Jean) Chaffee of Fargo, N.D., Randy (Carol) Chaffee of Climax and Margrae (Les) Molskness of Florida; and several Chaffee grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Vivian was preceded in death by her husbands, Harold Saastad and Gordon Chaffee; her parents; and her brother, Hartley.
