Edna Casey, 98

Red Lake Falls - Edna Casey, 98, died Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh.

Funeral services were held at Casey obit 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 17, at the Presbyterian Church in Red Lake Falls with Rev. Russell Harris officiating. Carol Thompson was the organist, and Jo Harris was the soloist. Casketbearers included Gary Purath, Steve Philion, Wilbur Nielson, Lee Nielson, Willard Purath, Terry Fladeland, and Darrell Johnson. Interment was in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Terrebonne with Johnson Funeral Service in charge of the arrangements.

Edna Katherine Rossen was born in Eugene, Ore. on April 14, 1904, the daughter of Nels and Eleanor (Andersen) Rossen. In about 1910, Edna's father traded his farm in Oregon for one in Red Lake County. Edna attended Prairie Queen Elementary School in Terrebonne Township and graduated from high school in Red Lake Falls. After Edna earned a normal school one-year teaching certificate, she taught in Broadus, Mont. in the 1920s.

On September 3, 1930, Edna married James Henry Casey in Shakopee. The couple began farming on Edna's father's farm in Terrebonne Township and purchased the farm in the late 1930s.

In about 1948, Edna resumed her teaching career at Prairie Queen School in Terrebonne Township. She also taught at Huot School and an an elementary school north of Red Lake Falls. The couple moved from their Terrebonne Township farm home to Red Lake Falls for the winter months.

In the late 1950s, Edna accepted an elementary teaching position in the McIntosh Schools and taught there until her retirement at the age of 65. During those years, Edna and James lived on their farm in Terrebonne Township from spring through fall and lived in McIntosh during the winter months.

After she went back to teaching, Edna resumed her education, earning a bachelor's degree from Moorhead State College. She also earned a certificate to teach remedial reading. After teaching in schools for 26 years, Edna taught individual adult students in reading. After her retirement, she and Jim lived on the farm until they later moved to Red Lake Falls. James died on October 31, 1973.

Prior to moving to McIntosh Manor Nursing Home, Edna was active with the Red Lake County Fair Board for more than 20 years. She was also a member of the Red Lake County Board of Aging, AFRAN French Club of Red Lake Falls, Royal Neighbors of America, Mentor and Red Lake Falls American Legion auxiliaries, Minnesota State Department of Aging, Elderhostel, Red Lake County Advisory Council, and Northwest Senior Federation. She also served as the legislative chairperson for Retired Educators of America, a Red Lake County 4-H leader for 18 years, and Sunday school superintendent in Mentor for 17 years.

Edna is survived by a son, Joseph (Delphine) Casey of Estes Park, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband; a daughter, Shirley Ann Foldoe; a son, James Donald Casey; her parents; a brother, Walter; and a sister, Annie. A00003B2002JU19
