Dr. Robert Carter Jr., 72

Bemidji - Dr. Robert Carter Jr., 72, died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at his son's home in Cottage Grove.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 25, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Dennis Raymond officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Bemidji.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church. Kok Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Griffith Carter Jr. was born on December 28, 1929 in Alliance, Ohio, the son of Robert and Iverne (Rowland) Carter. He spent his childhood in Bemidji and Alderson, W. Va. where he graduated from Alderson High School. He graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio; University of North Dakota; University of Washington, Seattle; and University of Minnesota. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Dr. Carter practice general medicine in Hettinger, N.D.; Washburn and Medford, Wisc.; and Mora. He also practiced radiology in Mora and for 20 years, in Thief River Falls. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, especially golf, reading, and wintering in Arizona with his wife, Joan.

On February 3, 1952, Robert married Joan Portman in Alliance, Ohio. After serving in the Air Force, he pursued his medical career, traveling across the country to several locations for schooling, residencies, and work as a practicing doctor. He retired from medicine, and in 1998, moved to his childhood home, a log cabin on Lake Bemidji. He spent his most recent winters in Surprise, Ariz.

Surviving Dr. Carter are his four sons, Bob (Tina) of Winter, Wisc., Greg (JB) of Kansas City; Jeff (Glenny) of Chandler, Ariz., and Brett (Jodi) of Cottage Grove; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother Guy (Belva) of Bemidji; and a sister-in-law.
