Muriel Carlson, 78

Thief River Falls - Muriel Norma Coralie Carlson, 78, died on Sunday, February 16, 2003 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Carlson, Norma Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 19 (today) at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Trail with the Rev. Joseph Abrahamson officiating. Kathy Bakke will be the organist. Casketbearers will be Lonny Burrack, Irvin Christianson, Howard Flateland, Wesley Flateland, Wendell Tommervik and Wayne Bakke. Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery in Trail. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Muriel Norma Coralie Tommervik was born on April 16, 1924 in Bear Park Township of Norman County, where she was raised by her grandparents, Halvor and Ella Tommervik. She was baptized and confirmed at Sundahl Lutheran Church. She grew up and attended school in Gary, graduating from high school in 1943.

On October 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Dale Carlson in Fertile. The couple lived in Sundahl for eight years. Dale was transferred to the creamery in Trail in 1952, and the couple raised their family there. Norma was a housewife until 1971, when Dale died. She then went to work at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook from 1973 until her retirement in 1985. Norma lived with her son, Harvey until 1988 when she moved into Skylight Apartments in Thief River Falls. She then lived with her daughter from 1989 until 2000, when she moved to Oakland Park Nursing Home and then to the CNC Unit, where she has since resided.

Norma was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, where she served as church organist for many years and held all of the church offices. She played at several of the parish churches over the years, sometimes playing at two or three Sunday services, as well as many funerals and weddings. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Trail, where she held all offices and was also a member of the Trail Community Club.

Survivors include children, Harvey Carlson of Trail and Melissa Carlson of Thief River Falls; a grandchild; a half-sister, Diane (Ted) Wright of Portland, Ore.; a half-brother, Michael (Ione) Hanson of Milwaukee, Ore.; a step-sister, Delores Staurt of Boise, Idaho; and many other relatives.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, Dale; a daughter, Emily; a son, Dwight; a step-sister, Esther Spaits; and step-brothers, Sidney and Dennis Hanson.
