- Donald Brekke, 72, died on Wednesday, October
16, 2002 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks,
N.D.
Funeral
services were held on
Monday,
October 21 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer
with Rev. Frank Ehling officiating. Linda Olson was
the organist and Jay Brekke was the soloist.
Special music was "I Can Only Imagine."
Casketbearers were Ferd DeHate, Jerry Skjerven Jr.,
Roger Gallant, Jim DuChamp, John Rosten, John
Helley, Arne Willet and Whitey Johnson. Honorary
casketbearers were Mike Skjerven, Tom Ruble, Steve
Pahlen, Chad Pahlen, Roger Ranum, Eddie Eskeli,
Bobbie Pahlen, Gary Duray, Duane Miska, Rick
Lorenson, Byron Rosten and all of Don's
grandchildren. Interment was in Clearwater Lutheran
Cemetery, near Plummer.
Donald
Oliver Brekke was born on January 6, 1930, the son
of Leonard and Elna (Peterson) Brekke in Red Lake
County. He grew up in Plummer and attended Pershing
High School. Don entered the US Army, served his
country and was honorable discharged. He was united
in marriage to Gail Adeline Knutson. Don returned
to Plummer, where he worked construction and also
worked for the pipeline. Don owned and operated
Brekke Digging for over 15 years. He had a hobby
farm with a few cattle and 50 acres of wheat. He
was a member of the Thief River Falls American
Legion, Immanuel Lutheran Church and the
International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49
for almost 40 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing
and listening to sports, especially the Twins,
Vikings and Timberwolves. Don also enjoyed country
music and spending time with his family.
Survivors
include his wife, Gail of Plummer; four sons, Bob
(Sue) Brekke of Vergas, Brian of Fargo, N.D., Jay
(Pam) of Menomonie, Wisc. and Mickey (Nancie) of
Thief River Falls; one step-son, Terry (Annette)
Knutson of Vadnais Heights; 11 grandchildren; two
brothers, Leonard (Vivian) of Thief River Falls and
Leroy (Lila) of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three sisters,
Lillian Fournier of Chinook, Mont., Ruth (Maurice)
Perreault of Bellingham, Wash. and Delores Donarski
of Grand Forks, N.D.; and several nieces and
nephews.
Don
was preceded in death by his parents; three
brothers, Walter, Joe and Willmar; two sisters,
Elaine and Marie; and a daughter-in-law, Connie
