Redwood Falls - Lester Borning, 79, formerly of Thief River Falls, died on Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at the Methodist Hospital in Redwood Falls.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 26 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church. Interment was in Redwood Falls Cemetery.

Lester Myles Borning was born on December 20, 1923, the son of Bernard and Bertha (Pruess) Borning, in rural Echo. At the age of 13, he moved with his family to Redwood Falls, where he attended school, graduating from Redwood Falls High School in 1941. After high school, Lester farmed with his father. In 1945, he entered the United States Army, serving until 1948. He then began as an intern with the DNR.

On December 12, 1948, he married Anna Lou Maasch in Vesta. Lester was a DNR Conservation Officer in Bemidji until 1953 when they moved to Slayton, where they resided until 1963. In 1963, they moved to Thief River Falls as Lester was promoted to area supervisor. He retired in 1982, but continued to live in Thief River Falls until 1987 when they moved to Alexandria. In 2001, they moved to Redwood Falls.

As a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, he was active as an elder, treasurer, trustee and served on the building committee. He also was evangelism chairman while living in Alexandria. Among his hobbies were hunting, fishing, trapping, bird watching and carpentry. During their various moves, Lester built seven houses, each of which he designed and did the plumbing, electrical and brick work. Lester was a devoted family man. He enjoyed fixing things, a trait he passed on to his sons.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; two sons, Jeffrey (Elaine) of Rosemount, and David (Joni) of Burnsville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Caroline Feder of Carlsbad, Calif., and Grace (Fred) Sather of New Ulm; and two brothers, Bernard (Coralie) of Moscow, Idaho, and Glenn (Elaine) of Echo.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. A00003B2003AR30
