Townsend, Mont. - Carl E. Bondley, 75, died Monday, May 27, 2002.

Memorial services were held Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at Connors Funeral Home Chapel. Burial of cremains took place in Deep Creek Cemetery with military honors.

Carl E. Bondley was born on March 26, 1927 in Everett, Washington, the son of Casper E. and Elsie Marie (Lund) Bondley. He spent his early childhood in Wibaux, Mont. before moving with his family to Thief River Falls in 1937. He attended country schools and the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston.

Carl enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served until 1945, attending basic training at Great Lakes, Ill. and serving on a ship that was involved in the attack on Wake Island. While in the Navy, Carl also learned to play the accordion.

In 1949, he started working for the Northern Pacific, which later became Burlington Northern Railroad, in Glendive, Mont. Later, he worked out of Billings and Laurel, Mont., eventually becoming foreman of the B & B Crew. Toward the end of his 35-year career with Burlington Northern Railroad, he was a scale master, traveling over most of Montana.

On September 13, 1968, Carl married Atha June Hummer in Sheridan, Wyo. After retiring, the couple moved to Townsend. June died on March 12, 1999.

Carl enjoyed mountains and the fact that he could view them from any window in his home. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed living so close to Canyon Ferry Lake.

Survivors include two brothers, Martin (Lorraine) Bondley of Lincoln, N.D. and Roy P. (Deloris) Bondley of Pelican Rapids; three sisters, Myrtle (Stanley) Robison of West Fargo, N.D., Emma (Gilmore) Borslien of Crookston, and Evelyn (Dick) Hruby of Thief River Falls; a stepdaughter, Darlene (Mike) Huhta of Arlington, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews; three step-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Preceding Carl in death were his wife; a son, Jeff; his parents; a sister, Annette; a niece; and a nephew.
