Clarence Bengtson, 92

Lake Five, Mont. - Clarence Bengtson, 92, died Thursday, April 12, 2001.

Arrangements and cremation were under the direction of Johnson Mortuary and Crematory.

Clarence Joseph Bengtson was born on September 17, 1908 in St. Hilaire. In May of 1929, he rode a freight train west and got off at East Glacier, Glacier National Park. This was the beginning of his 45-year career on park road work and maintenance supervision on both the east and west sides of the park, earning him the nickname "Mr. Roads."

On December 23, 1936, he married Winifred L. Dyer. The couple shared 60 years together, the last 22 years at their home near Lake Five.

After his retirement from Glacier in 1975, he enjoyed working in his yard and garden, walking with his dogs and working crossword puzzles.

Clarence is survived by four sons, Chuck (Susan), Jim (Stacey), Tom (Sharon) and John, all of West Glacier, Mont.; three daughters, Susan (Jim) McDonald of LaGrange, Ky., Karen (Todd) Hileman of West Glacier, Mont. and Mary (Kyle) Johnson of Columbia Falls, Mont.; 25 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Alice Rux, Gladys Turney and Evelyn Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, two sisters and a grandson. A00003B2000MY23
