Arnold Bengston, 72

Newfolden - Arnold Bengtson, 72, died Saturday, March 9, 2002 at his home near Newfolden.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, Bengtson obit March 13) at Alma Lutheran Church in Argyle with Rev. Kenneth Thoreson and Rev. Raynard Huglen officiating. Marlene Jorgenson will be the organist, and Rev. Thoreson will be the soloist. Casketbearers will be DeVere Chapman, Ron Ueland, Greg Bengtson, Brian Bengtson, Wallace Bengtson, and Steven Bengtson. All of Arnold's grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as honorary casketbearers. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden.

Visitation was held Tuesday, March 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Arnold Eldon Bengtson was born on April 1, 1929 at Dykman Farm in Marsh Grove Township of Marshall County, the son of Bernhart T. and Inga Sophie (Bjorgaard) Bengtson. He was baptized on June 2, 1929 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden and confirmed there in 1943. He grew up in New Maine Township where he attended Charlie Nelson School. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Janet Jorgenson.

On March 29. 1980, Arnold was united in marriage to Margie Ueland Hemmingson at Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley. Arnold worked for numerous area construction companies, mostly as a bulldozer operator. Since 1953, he had farmed in New Maine Township, and he also worked for several area farmers, doing field work and combining.

Arnold was a trustee and head usher at Westaker Free Lutheran Church in Newfolden.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and wood cutting, especially when in the company of his brothers and friends.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Margie of Newfolden; two daughters, Barbara (Larry) Ekman of Newfolden and Janelle Bengtson of Wayzata; a stepdaughter, Murial (James) Bateson of Gary; three stepsons, Bruce (Elva) Hemmingson of Coon Rapids, Wayne Hemmingson of Brooklyn Center, and Stuart (Kathy) Hemmingson of Eagan; 22 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Ueland and Darlene Chapman, both of Newfolden; and three brothers, Leonard (Sandra) of Middle River, and Vernon (Lois) and Lloyd (Leanna) Bengtson, both of Newfolden.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randy; his parents; grandparents; and two brothers-in-law, Norman Ueland and Ray Chapman. A00003B2002MR13
