Leo Bendel, 87

Red Lake Falls - Leo Bendel, 87, died Sunday, May 20, 2001 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 23) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Special music will be provided by St. Joseph's Church Choir, and military honors will be accorded by members of the Red Lake Falls American Legion Post. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake Falls.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services. Johnson Funeral Service of Red Lake Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Leo Adam Bendel was born on March 3, 1914 at Leo, the son of John Sr. and Mary (Brown) Bendel. When he was an infant, he moved with his family to Red Lake Falls. Leo attended St. Joseph's Catholic School. He entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on November 24, 1945.

On December 29, 1947, Leo was united in marriage to Agnes "Josephine" Berg at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. The couple lived in Red Lake Falls all of their lives, and Leo worked as self-employed plumber for 30 years. Since Josephine's death on January 23, 2000, Leo had resided at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls and the Red Lake Falls American Legion and VFW Posts.

Leo is survived by a sister, Florence Miller of Red Lake Falls; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; five brothers, Clarence, Joseph, Carl, Balsey and John Jr.; and four sisters, Frances Constant, Mary Fitzgerald, Sabina Remick and Clara Bendel. A00003B2000MY23
