Clarence Beck, 98

Hallock - Clarence Beck, 98, of Hallock, died at the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock on Saturday evening, July 17, 2004.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 21 (today) at Sion Lutheran Church in Lancaster. Interment will be held at Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery in Lancaster, with Rev. Timothy Lundeen presiding. Casket bearers include Clarence's grandchildren. Honorary casket bearers include the Hallock Lion's Club.

Clarence was born in Waverly, Iowa on December 1, 1905, the son of Dorr and Mary (Lampe) Beck. His family moved to Belgrade, when Clarence was four months old and in 1915 they moved to Lancaster. Clarence moved to Minneapolis and worked for Purity Bakery there for several years. On May 13, 1925, he married Ida Meyers in Minneapolis. They returned to Lancaster and settled on a farm north of town. In 1953, Clarence began working at the ASCS office in Hallock. He retired from there in 1975. Ida died on July 17, 1966. Clarence married Emma Johnson on January 19, 1968 in Tucson, Ariz. Emma died on March 12, 2003.

Clarence led a very rich and active life, playing semi-pro baseball for the Phillips 66 Flyers in Minneapolis, playing community baseball until he was 62, coaching Lancaster Legion baseball, deer hunting, and shooting his last deer at the age of 90. He was also active in Kittson County, serving on the hospital board from 1952 to 1977, the Northwest Minnesota Multi-County Housing Authority commission from 1972 to 1992, the Lion's Club and was Kittson County's Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1978. Clarence became a resident of the healtcare center in February.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley (Elwood) Ehrenstrom of Thief River Falls; one son, Bill (Marilyn) Beck of Ottertail; a daughter-in-law, Iris Beck of Otter Tail; 10 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Walter Beck of Oakland, Calif.

He was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd and three sisters, Thelma, Olinda and Viola.
