Carlyle Askeland, 91

Askeland, Carlyle PhotoGrygla - Carlyle Askeland, 91, died Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla, with Rev.'s Virgil Rassmuson, Bob LaPos and Mary Ronning-Gilthvedt officiating. Casket bearers include Corey Harbott, Stephen Stavenes, Michael Anderson, Jason Anderson, Jamie Anderson, Michael Askeland, Malachi Askeland and Tomas Loberg. Honorary casket bearers included Tiffany Harbott, Sarah Stavenes, Emily Mosbeck, Reidar Carlson, Roidan Carlson, Justin Erickson, Teddi-Ann Erickson, Shawna Askeland, and Brittany Loberg. Interment will be at Valle Cemetery in, Benville Township of Beltrami County.

Visitation will be 4 &endash; 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, at Johnson-Green Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with a 7 p.m. prayer service and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Carlyle Askeland was born July 30, 1912 in Benville Township, Beltrami County, the son of Sivert and Martha (Olson) Askeland. He was baptized and confirmed at Valle Lutheran Church. He grew up and attended Dalos Country School.

On October 28, 1949, Carlyle was united in marriage to Grace Jelle at the Grygla Parsonage. Carlyle worked in Thompson, North Dakota when he was 14, with his father during World War II while his brothers served in the military. He purchased a farm in 1944 east of Grygla and farmed until December of 2003, when he moved into Independence Hall in Grygla. He also worked at Land O'Lakes Turkey Plant in Thief River Falls from 1962 &endash; 1972.

Carlyle was a member of Liberty Chapel in Grygla. He liked to farm, break horses and at times served as a country veterinarian. He spent time reading his Bible and especially loved spending time with family. He loved visiting people and was known by all and loved by many.

Survivors include his wife, Grace of Grygla; children, Karen (Jerry) Anderson of Baudette, Susan (Wade) Harbott of Newfolden, Marilyn (Kelly) Mosbeck of Red Lake Falls, Larry (Tamara) Askeland of Grygla, Lynette (Ron) Carlson of Seattle, Wash., Mark (Susan) Askeland of Euclid and Debby (Mark) Loberg of Grygla; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Alvina (Alan) Tinsley of Yakima, Wash.; brothers, Alton (Ione)of Loveland, Colo. and Selmer (Bernice) of Simms, Mont.; sister-in-law, Tillie Askeland of Warroad and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; one sister, Myrtle Nelson; and brothers, Orville, Norman and Sidney.
