Thief
River Falls - Joseph Armstrong, 64, died on
Saturday, June 7, 2003 at Altru Hospital in Grand
Forks, N.D.
Funeral
services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June
11 (today) at Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River
Falls with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating.
Casketbearers will be Bob Wald, Tom Falls, Ray
Thode, Les Cota, Earl Hoefer, Myles Alberg, Kevin
Armstrong and Murray Engelstad. Honorary
casketbearers will be all of Joe's hunting,
fishing, elevator and coffee club buddies.
Interment will be held in St. Pauli Cemetery of
rural Thief River Falls. Visitation will be held
for one hour prior to services at the
church.
Joseph
Gerald Armstrong was born in Strathcona on April
22, 1939, the son of Lee and Francis (Novak)
Armstrong. He was raised and educated in country
schools, graduating from the Agricultural College
in Crookston in 1957. He entered the US Air Force
in 1958 and served in Okinawa, Japan, as an
airplane mechanic and was honorably discharged in
1962. After his discharge, Joe worked between
California and Florida as a Federal Fruit and
Vegetable Inspector.
On April
6, 1963, he married Virginia "Ginny" Kaye Finstad.
In 1965, they purchased the Finstad family farm,
where they have since made their home, raising
registered Hereford cattle and grain.
Joseph
was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed
camping and traveling. He was a member of Zion
Lutheran Church, the St. Hilaire Coffee Club, a
former member of the Minnesota Deer Hunters
Association, Barley and Wheat Growers and the Thief
River Falls American Legion.
Survivors
include his wife, Ginny of Thief River Falls; two
children, Lynell (Bob) Wayne of Thief River Falls
and Nicolle (Chris) Ellison of Harwood; two
grandchildren; four brothers, Charles (Janet) of
Crookston, David (Rosie) of Euclid, Art (Janeth) of
Lander, Wyo., and Harry (Lorraine) of Breckenridge;
four sisters, Nancy (Galen) Pederson of Manteo,
N.C., Ellen (Wallace) Johnson of Detroit Lakes,
Agnes Selin of Red Lake Falls, and Esther Cota of
Red Lake Falls; and many nieces and
nephews.
Joseph is
preceded in death by his parents and one infant
daughter.
