Red Lake Falls - Donald Appel, 78, died Thursday, November 27, 2003 at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was Appel, Donald photo2 held Monday, Dec. 1, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, with Father Tim McGee officiating. Casket bearers included Steven Appel, Mark Appel, Ray Appel, LaNea Haugen, Donna Iverson and Danelle Riske. Interment was at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Donald Jerome Appel was born August 29, 1925 near Holt, the son of Peter and Mathilda (Metzler) Appel. He grew up and attended Oak Grove rural school near Thief River Falls and Woodrow Wilson School near Goodridge.

On October 5, 1951, Donald was united in marriage to Neva Langworthy in Thief River Falls. He served in the United States Army, in Germany as an MP, from 1953-1955.

He was employed at Northern Woodwork, Bridgeman's and bus driver for St. Hilaire School District. He also worked for the City of St. Hilaire for 22 years and was a volunteer Fire Chief for many years.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing solitaire and family. His grandchildren were very special to him.

Donald was a member of St. Bernard's Church and served on the St. Hilaire City Council and Inter Tri-County. He was instrumental in starting civic organizations in St. Hilaire and Thief River Falls. He was a member of the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post 117 and VFW Post 2793.

Survivors include his wife, Neva, of St. Hilaire; three sons, Steven (Vanessa) of Thief River Falls, Mark (Kristi) of Barnesville, and Ray (Tracy) of Bemidji; three daughters, LaNea (Darrell) Haugen of Shevlin, Donna (Dennis) Iverson of Austin, and Danelle (Roger) Riske of Grand Forks, N.D.; 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Viola Appel of Richfield, Idaho, Shirley Appell of Grand Forks, N.D. and Margie Appel of Pendleton, Ore.; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy; parents; a sister, Eloise Srnsky; and four brothers, James, Leonard, Edward and Raymond. A00003B2003DC03
