Woodrow Almquist, 81

St. Hilaire - Woodrow "Woodie" Almquist, 81, died Sunday, July 9, 2000 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D. as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on June 26, 2000 near St. Hilaire.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, July 14 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Terri Cuppett officiating. Joyce Halbasch will be the organist. Vocal music will be provided by Ruth Christensen, Kent Hudson, and Pastor and Karen Sich. Casketbearers will be Gary Almquist, Rob Almquist, Dennis Horner, Ryan Horner, Burke Almquist, Travis Almquist, Dan Almquist and Tyler Almquist. Honorary casketbearers will be Jaime Horner, Randi Horner, Erin Treffry, Kelly Almquist and Kim Almquist. Burial will be in Community Cemetery in River Falls township of Pennington county.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 13 at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with a 7 p.m. prayer service and at the church for one hour prior to services on Friday.

Woodrow Jens Almquist was born on October 28, 1918 in Black River township of Pennington county, the son of Jens and Signe (Brink) Almquist. He was baptized and confirmed at Tarna Lutheran Church in St. Hilaire and attended school in St. Hilaire, graduating in 1936. Following high school, he farmed with his father, carrying on the family farm tradition until his retirement in 1986. Woodie also drove school bus in St. Hilaire for many years. He served as a Pennington county commissioner in the 1960s.

On October 6, 1949, Woodrow was united in marriage to Verda Mae Eckstein at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls. The couple made their home in Black River township of Pennington county.

He enjoyed baseball, playing for the St. Hilaire Saints and other area teams and fishing in the summer and winter. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends and watching his children and grandchildren participate in various activities.

Woodrow is survived by two daughters, Peggy (Dennis) Horner of Inkster, N.D. and Julie Treffry of Moorhead; two sons, Gary (Nicki) Almquist of Fargo, N.D. and Rob (Mary) Almquist of St. Hilaire; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Anton Almquist of Davis, Calif. and Basil (Senora) Almquist of Cummings, N.D.; three sisters, Laura Durman of Pocatello, Idaho, Ollie (Ray) Durman of Wheat Ridge, Colo. and Shirley (Norman) Busse of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verda on June 26, 2000; two sisters, Edna Carlson and Vera Fehr; three brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law. A00003B2000JL12
