 Verda Almquist, 72

St. Hilaire - Verda Almquist, 72, died Monday, June 26, 2000 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls as the result of an automobile accident near St. Hilaire.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 1 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Terri Cuppett officiating. Joyce Halbasch was the organist. Casketbearers were Gary Almquist, Rob Almquist, Dennis Horner, Ryan Horner, Burke Almquist, Travis Almquist, Dan Almquist and Tyler Almquist. Honorary Casketbearers were Jaime Horner, Randi Horner, Erin Treffry, Kelly Almquist and Kim Almquist. Burial was in Community Cemetery in River Falls township of Pennington county. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Verda Mae Eckstein was born on February 18, 1928 at Wylie, the daughter of Fred and Adena (Harbott) Eckstein. She was baptized on March 11, 1928 at Wylie and confirmed on August 31, 1941 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wylie. She grew up and attended country school in Red Lake county. After graduating from Red Lake Falls High School in 1945, she completed LPN training and worked as a nurse.

On October 6, 1949, Verda was united in marriage to Woodrow Almquist at St. John Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls. The couple made their home in Black River township of Pennington county. Verda worked at the St. Hilaire Creamery and the St. Hilaire Elevator as a bookkeeper. She later worked at Eckstein Hardware in Red Lake Falls for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed gardening, baking and especially spending time with her family.

Verda is survived by her husband, Woodrow "Woodie" of St. Hilaire; two daughters, Peggy (Dennis) Horner of Inkster, N.D. and Julie Treffry of Moorhead; two sons, Gary (Nicki) Almquist of Fargo, N.D. and Rob (Mary) Almquist of St. Hilaire; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Gaven of St. Hilaire and Marion (Charles) Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska; three brothers, Roger (Olive) Eckstein of Red Lake Falls, Virgil (Darlene) Eckstein of Anchorage, Alaska and Robert (Janice) Eckstein of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Fred Jr.; and a brother-in-law. A00003B2000JL5
