George Aanstad, 88

Ludington, MI -- George E. Aanstad, 88, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000 at Baywood Nursing Home.

A memorial service was held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, at Emanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Wayne Buskirk officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery.

George Eugene Aanstad was born in Thief River Falls on May 2, 1911, the son of Hans L. and Rose (Soglo) Aanstad who were from Norway. He grew up and attended school in Thief River Falls. He attended the University of Minnesota where he was on the freshman football team which later won the national championship. He graduated from the University of North Dakota.

On November 20, 1941, he married Inga "Ginger" Loken in Thief River Falls. George was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He and Ginger lived in Austin for 30 years where he was president of Our Savior's Lutheran Church for two years and taught Sunday school for 20 years. He enjoyed sports, playing golf, tennis and horseshoes as often as possible.

George was employed by the Internal Revenue Service for 28 years. As a retirement project, he compiled federal tax return forms and instructions for every year the IRS has been in existence and published a book with that information.

He and his wife retired to Ludington, MI in 1980 to live closer to their daughter Vicki and her family. In Ludington, George was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church where he served as president, chairman of Social Ministries and as a Sunday school teacher. He was also an active supporter of the Ludington Salvation Army, serving several years as board secretary. He was a regular blood donor for the community. Ginger died in 1994.

George is survived by two daughters, Vicki L. Dorrell of Ludington, MI and Judy A. Aanstad (husband, Brad Rauschenberg) of Winston-Salem, NC; one brother, Leo (Dorothy) Aanstad of Anoka; and four grandchildren.
