Melvin H. Zitzow, 78, died Wednesday, October 11, 2000 at McIntosh
Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 14, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead with Rev. John Hulden officiating. Casketbearers were Chad Zitzow, Jeremiah Zitzow, Tyson Zitzow, Matthew Zitzow, Brian Mueller and Paul Stazsko. Arrangements were will David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.
Melvin Henry Zitzow was born on October 28, 1921 at Luce, the son of Henry and Esther (Loebrick) Zitzow. He grew up in the Vergas area, attending schools in both Frazee and Vergas and graduating from Perham High School. He worked for the Franklin Fence Co. in Vergas, for various farmers and for the Perham newspaper as a typesetter.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Air Corps as an officer's chef. While stationed in England, he met Beatrice Northfield, and they were united in marriage in England in 1944.
Melvin returned to the United States in 1945, and Beatrice came to the states a year later. They resided in Thief River Falls where he worked for the Thief River Falls Times and also farmed in the area. The couple moved to East Grand Forks, and Melvin worked for the Grand Forks Herald until 1987 when he retired. He then worked part-time for the State of Minnesota at Fisher's Landing Rest Area on U.S. Hwy. 2. Mildred died in 1995, and in April of 1997, Melvin moved to Moorhead where he resided at Fairmont Apartments.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne (Ruthie) of Moorhead, Darryl (Thea) of Ogema and Rocky of Chicago, Ill.; a brother, Gordon (Bernice) of Moorhead; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a brother, Robert. A00003B2000OC11
