
Middle River
- Howard M. Young, 85, died Monday, October 23, 2000 at Altru
Hospital in Grand Forks, N.D.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 26, at First Lutheran Church in Middle River with Rev. John Jorgensen officiating. Special music was provided by Lois Peterson and Lois Anderson, and the eulogy was delivered by Pat Collins. Casketbearers were Danny Zak, Stan Sjoberg, Rudy Borg, Richard Filpula, Mike Schenkey and Marc Schenkey. Military honors were accorded by Middle River American Legion Post 444. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery in Middle River with Collins Funeral Home of Middle River in charge of the arrangements.
Howard Melvin Young was born on January 31, 1915 at Middle River, the son of Henry and Anna (Wallin) Young. He attended school and grew up in Middle River and was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church.
Howard served with the U.S. Army from September of 1942 until December of 1945, serving in Englund. Following his discharge, he returned to Middle River and began working at Young's General Store.
In November of 1947, he was united in marriage to Hazel Lagergren at Sauk Rapids. The couple made their home in Middle River. Hazel died on March 31, 1966.
On September 5, 1976, Howard married Lorene Wright at East Grand Forks. The couple made their home in Middle River where they continued to operate Young's Store.
He was a long-time member and past commander of the Middle River American Legion Post and a life-time member of First Lutheran Church of Middle River.
One of Howard's favorite pastimes was his daily drives on the so-called "Bunny Trail" near Middle River.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene; two daughters, Patsy Young and Bobbi (Steve) Holm, both of Middle River; a stepdaughter, Dolly (Dennis) Whiteman of Ritzville, Wash.; three grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Hazel; a brother, Herman; and four sisters, Mary, Hilma, Helen and Gladys.
