
Red Lake Falls - Cyril J. Wavra, 90, died Sunday, May 31, 1998 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Dorothy's Catholic Church in Dorothy with Father Gary LaMoine officiating. Polly Beyer will be the organist. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Petterson Funeral Home in Red Lake Falls and also for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Cyril Joseph Wavra was born on March 23, 1908 at Tabor, the son of James and Mary (Balek) Wavra. He was raised and attended school in the Euclid area. He worked in the potato warehouses and at American Crystal Sugar in East Grand Forks.
On September 20, 1930 he was united in marriage to Bertha Goosen at Euclid. They farmed in the Euclid area until 1935 when they purchased a farm near Dorothy. They lived and farmed there until he retired in 1973. He also worked at American Crystal Sugar in Crookston from 1955 until 1973. Bertha died on March 5, 1976. Cyril moved into Red Lake Falls in 1993 and to the Hillcrest Nursing Home three years ago.
He was a member of St. Dorothy's Catholic Church and served on the church council. He also served on the school board in Dist. 22 (Dorothy). He played the accordian and was a square dance caller. He was active in the square dance club at Dorothy.
Cyril is survived by two daughters, Lois (Paul) Proulx and Kathie (Jack) Peterson, both of Crookston; one son, Kenneth (Helen) Wavra of Crookston; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one brother, Clem Wavra of Red Lake Falls; one sister, Clara Phelps of Sequim, WA; and one sister-in-law, Mary Wavra of Red Lake Falls.
Cyril is preceded in death by his wife, Bertha; parents; one granddaughter, Brenda Wavra; three brothers, Gordon, Dorn and Lenhart; and three sisters, Jean Regina Airhart, Marcella Baurgaard and Florence Landon.
