Blaine Turner, 80

Mentor - Blaine Turner, 80, died Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis.

Memorial services were held at at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 13, at Johnson Funeral Service in Red Lake Falls with Rev. Sylvia Jerdee officiating.

Blaine Thorvold Turner was born on March 17, 1920 at Mott, N.D., the son of Allen and Thea Turner. He grew up in the Mott area and moved with his parents to the Mentor area when he was 17. Prior to joining the U.S. Army and serving in World War II, Blaine worked for Pete Sebenaler. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Mentor where he farmed and drove school bus.

On February 7, 1942, he was united in marriage to Billie Grover at Mentor. Blaine moved to Bloomington. Employment included working for Allis Chalmer, sales, driving truck, working as a mechanic and as a construction foreman on the iron range.

On October 30, 1980, Blaine was united in marriage to Beverly Rhode at Crookston. The couple owned and operated Turners Tavern and Riverside Tavern in Jacobson from 1973 until 1983. In 1986, Blaine returned to Mentor where he helped with maintenance for the City of Mentor.

He enjoyed tinkering with small and large engines, watching westerns and doing odd jobs at Maple Lake.

Blaine is survived by a daughter, Fern Toutgas of Forrest Lake, two grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Debra Rhode of Mentor; two stepsons, Gary Rhode of Missouri and Jeff (Colleen) Rhode of Helena, Mont.; five step grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Claire Toulibaski of Crookston; a sister, Leora Erickson of Minneapolis; three sisters-in-law; and many other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Steven Turner; a stepson, Rodney Rhode; two brothers, Maurice Turner and Glen Turner; and a sister, Gladys Cowan. A00003B2000JA17
