Wallace Tunberg, 79

Thief River Falls - Wallace "Wally" Tunberg, 79, died Wednesday, Tunberg Obit November 24, 1999 at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 27 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. John Wollenzien and Rev. Tim Bauer officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and soloists were Jan Peterson and Leroy Aasland. Piano and keyboard music was provided by Andrea and Ann Tunberg.

Honorary casketbearers were Billy Bye, Lou Jones, Jim Lanenberg, Roy Lee, Jarvis Prichard, Milton Reierson, Gail Rux, Ralph Skay, Lloyd Sunde and J. J. Womack. Casketbearers were Bob Anderson, Robert Bredeson, Leonard Furuseth, Don Hill, Gary Inglis, Ron Johnson, Mervin Prestebak and Stan Upham. Military honors were accorded by the Thief River Falls VFW and American Legion. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls. The Green Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Wallace Charles Tunberg was born on August 20, 1920 in Clearbrook, the son of Frank Ernest and Marie Antoinette (Olson) Tunberg. He was baptized as an infant and lived in Clearbrook during the first years of his life. In 1929 the family moved to Thief River Falls. Wally attended schools in Clearbrook and Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1938. He attended Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks, ND and the University of Minnesota in business.

He enlisted in the service and served in the Army Air Force as a fighter pilot. Following his discharge Wally returned to Thief River Falls and joined his dad at Tunberg Motor Company. He semi-retired in 1988.

He was united in marriage to Bonnie Jernberg on June 4, 1949 at Roseau. The couple made their home and raised their family in Thief River Falls.

Wally was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion, Elks, Masonic Lodge, Shriners and was active in Rotary and Sports Boosters and various other community committees and activities. He served on the Northwestern Hospital board and the Minnesota Automobile Dealers Association.

He enjoyed sports, fishing and especially spending time with his family.

Wally is survived by his wife, Bonnie; one daughter, Patricia "Patty" Lynne Rockstad (special friend Ron Olson) of Moorhead; two sons, Dr. Thomas "Tom" (Ann) Tunberg of Cambridge and Jeffrey "Jeff" (Jill) Tunberg of Thief River Falls; four grandchildren; one brother, Roger (Ardy) Tunberg of Thief River Falls; his mother-in-law, Alice Jernberg, and a brother-in-law, both of Portland, OR.
