River Falls - Oscar Torkelson, 75, died Sunday, February 7, 1999
at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 12 at Green Funeral Home Chapel in Thief River Falls with Reverend Marcia Sylvester officiating. Music will be provided by Grace Hammer. Burial will follow services at St. Pauli Cemetery in Rocksbury township of Pennington county with military rites provided by the Thief River Falls American Legion and VFW Posts.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 11 from noon until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Oscar Ingvold Torkelson was born on January 15, 1924 in Rocksbury township of Pennington county, the son of Anfin and Anetta (Lokken) Torkelson. He was baptized on March 23, 1924 at St. Pauli Lutheran Church. He was confirmed there on July 3, 1938. Oscar attended Braaten School near St. Pauli and grew up in the area.
He entered the United States Navy on March 25, 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 4, 1946. He then returned to the area and farmed with his father for a number of years.
Oscar became ill and was at the Veterans Administration Hospital in St. Cloud for many years. He also resided at Ah Gwah Ching, Oakland Park Nursing Home and Hillcrest Nursing Home.
Survivors include one brother, Ludvig Johnson of Crookston; and three sisters, Agnes Hanson and Mabel Torkelson, both of Thief River Falls, and Ragna Terry of Bemidji.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Thorvald Torkelson; and two sisters, Rose in infancy and Sophie Helgeland.
