Belmer A. Thompson, 77, died Thursday, August 17, 2000 at
Rochester.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 21, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Roseau with Rev. Erling Huglen officiating. Hazel Halvorson was the organist, and the vocalist was Stan Kindzerski. Casketbearers were Belmer's 10 grandchildren: Matthew, Elissa and Adam Biskner; Patrick and Daniel Dardis; Jennifer and Sarah Wilson; Casey and Lee Thompson; and August Foss. Interment was in Hope Cemetery in Roseau with military honors provided by the Roseau Memorial Honor Guard. Gieseke Funeral Chapel of Greenbush was in charge of the arrangements.
Belmer A. Thompson was born on October 25, 1922 on a farm in Soler township of Roseau county near Greenbush, the son of Charles and Carri (Graff) Thompson. He graduated from Greenbush High School in 1940. He attended teachers training in Roseau and then taught in Roseau county schools. Belmer served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945. He served as the Roseau County Auditor from 1946 until 1948.
In 1947, Belmer married Helen Skrutvold in Roseau. From 1948 until 1954, he was a partner in Trane-Thompson Furniture and Appliance Store in Karlstad. In 1954, he purchased the Chevrolet dealership in Greenbush, owning and operating Thompson Chevrolet for 31 years until his retirement in 1985.
Throughout his life, Belmer was very active in church, community and civic organizations. He was a charter member and first president of the Karlstad Lions Club, treasurer of the Karlstad School Board, longtime member and president of Greenbush Civic and Commerce, director of Greenbush and Border State Banks, secretary of Greenbush Community Hospital, president and trustee of Bethel Lutheran Church of Greenbush, member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and member of the American Legion for more than 54 years, and board member of the Four Seasons Center of Roseau.
Belmer is survived by his wife, Helen; one son, Chuck (JoAnne) Thompson of Roseau; five daughters, Carolyn (Byron) Eeg of Greenbush, Kristi Thompson of Upper Arlington, Ohio, Louise (Bernie) Dardis of West Fargo, N.D., Linda (Craig) Wilson of Bloomington and Kim (Ron) Foss of Edina; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Delford (Margaret) Thompson of Yakima, Wash.; four sisters, Thelma Jenson of Greenbush, Jennie Wickstrom of Roseau, Lizzie Kjersten of Greenbush and Hilda Blazek of Badger; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Cambell Thompson; and two sisters, Alpha Jenson and Belle Holm.
