
Bottineau, ND - Alta M. Thom, 97, formerly of Thief River Falls, died Friday, January 2, 1998 at a Bottineau health care center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 6 in the chapel of the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau, ND with Reverend Kevin Boucher officiating. Deborah Stewart sang, and Shirley Vandal was the organist. Alta's grandchildren served as honorary casketbearers. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando, ND.
Alta M. Hagen was born on March 3, 1900 at Roseau, the daughter of Nick and Neelie (Howard) Hagen. She was raised there and attended public school in Roseau.
On October 8, 1924 she was united in marriage to Sterling Thom at Roseau. The couple lived at Cando, ND for a year and in Doyon, ND for a time. In 1938 the family moved to Thief River Falls. Alta was employed by the L.B. Hartz Grocery Store from 1949 until 1970. Sterling passed away on May 6, 1983. Alta continued to make her home in Thief River Falls until 1988 when she moved to Bottineau, ND to be near her daughter. Since February of 1997 she has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Bottineau.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the V.F.W. Auxiliary of Thief River Falls.
Alta is survived by one daughter, Marlys Vad of Bottineau, ND; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Sterling, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Geraldine in 1934; one sister; and four brothers.
