Clara was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Thief River Falls and later confirmed at Ekelund Church in Erie. She attended school in Thief River Falls until she was eight years old and moved with her family to Star township where she attended school. Later, Clara attended Minneapolis Technical School for nursing. She worked as a private nurse in Minneapolis for a few years before moving to Chicago, Ill.

The couple returned to Chicago where they operated an apartment house complex and later the High Life Inn on Clark Street for five or six years. They sold that business and moved to Morton Grove, Ill. where they operated the Prairie Schooner. A year after Otto died, Clara sold the business and moved to a house she built in Big Fork, Mont.
On her 80th birthday on May 19, 1989, Clara married Olaf Stolaas at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge. For a few years following their marriage, the couple spent their summers in Big Fork, Mont. and winters on Olaf's farm near Oklee.
