Hazel Stokke, 87

Viking - Hazel Stokke, 87, died Friday, March 5, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 7 at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking with Reverend Paul Chell officiating. Gloria Ness was the organist, and Sheri Chell was the soloist. Casketbearers were Roger Anderson, Hilmer Ellingson, Gene Halvorson, Scott Peters, Vance Peters and Tom Yutrzenka. Burial was in Viking Cemetery. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel Rosalie Peterson was born on September 16, 1911 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Andrew and Rosalie (Swenson) Peterson. She was raised in St. Paul and Spencer, Nebraska, and moved with her family to Viking in 1927.

On September 7, 1938 Hazel was united in marriage to Louis Stokke in East Grand Forks. Louis disposed of his business in Thief River Falls in 1940 and the couple moved to a farm near Viking where Hazel lived the rest of her life. The couple farmed and raised turkeys. Louie died in 1966.

Hazel enjoyed keeping up with sports and current events. She was active in the lives of her grandchildren and kept a daily diary for 35 years.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Viking.

Hazel is survived by one son, Lyle (Mavis) Stokke of Greenbush; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step daughters, Evalette (Edd) Ruth of Sonora, CA and Alice (Peterson) Whisler of East Grand Forks; one nephew; three step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins and step cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Mabel; two brothers, Raymond and Donald; and two step sons, Leo and Morris.
