
Stephen - Gunnar A. Sten, 78, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in the Good Samaritan Center of Warren.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 31 at Stephen Catholic Church of Stephen. Burial was in St. Stephen Catholic Cemetery.
Casketbearers were Mike Douglas, Vernon Smith, Roger Nelson, David Kostrzewski, David Wesolowski and Wayne Knoll. Honorary casketbearers were Wallace Harris, Ted Chwialkowski, Arnie Tanem, Leonard Bazey, Marcel Douglas and Amos Larson.
Gunnar Årvid Sten was born on November 14, 1918 in Donnelly Township, Marshall County, the son of Robert and Ida (Tofta) Sten. He received his education in rural schools in the Stephen area. He was united in marriage on November 20, 1941 to Betty Dufault in Argyle. They lived in Stephen and he was employed by Roy Benson and Son. He served in the US Army 747th Tank Battalion in Europe during World War II and was part of the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He received two Purple Hearts.
He was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church of Stephen, Knights of Columbus, Stephen American Legion Post #390 and Kennedy VFW Post #3828.
He is survived by wife Betty of Stephen; son Arvid (Julia) Sten of Argyle; daughter Linda (John) Meek of Duluth; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Vera Johnson; brothers John, Vernon, Clarence, Charles "Bobby" and one in infancy.
