Leland Steen, 86

Golden Valley - Leland Steen, 86, died Sunday, August 20, 2000 in Golden Valley.

A memorial service was held on Friday, August 25, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley.

Leland Wesley Steen was born on August 9, 1914 in Superior, Wisc., the son of Conrad and Alta Steen. He graduated from Augsburg College in 1938. During this time, he spent several months in Norway traveling with the Augsburg Male Quartet. Following graduation, he taught English and music at Oak Grove High School in Fargo, N.D.

In 1942, Leland married Ruth Framstad at Valley City, N.D. In 1943, he graduated from Augsburg Seminary and was ordained into the Lutheran ministry. Following his first parish in Moose Lake, MN, he served as an Army chaplain during World War II. After he returned to parish ministry, he served at Oak Grove Lutheran, Richfield; First Lutheran, Richmond Beach, Wash.; Zion Lutheran, Thief River Falls; Bethlehem Lutheran, Proctor; and Our Saviors Lutheran, Rockford, Ill.

Leland is survived by his wife, Ruth of Golden Valley; four daughters, Cynthia (Dennis) Jindra of Eveleth, Tamra (George) Nelson of Minneapolis, Deborah (David) Hall of Ventura, Calif. and Rebecca Bjordal of Plymouth; one son, Mark (Lynnette) Steen of Duluth; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Royal (Jean) Steen of Superior, Wisc. and John (Esther) Steen of Maple Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Fay (Roy) Nygaard; and one grandson, Jeremy Dennis Jindra. A00003B2000AG30
