
Thief River Falls - Arthur Stenseth, 90, died Sunday, September 13, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 17 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend Galen Sylvester officiating. Joyce Halbasch will be the organist, and vocal music will be provided by Grace Hammer. Casketbearers will be Rob Cartier, Mark Cartier, Griffin Newland and Jerry Stenseth. Honorary casketbearers will be all of Art's relatives and friends. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with military rites provided by the Thief River Falls American Legion and VFW Posts.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday, September 16) at the Green Funeral Home and for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Arthur Stenseth was born on November 28, 1907 in Smiley township of Pennington county, the son of Lewis O. and Tina Stenseth. He was baptized into Christian faith at Bethany Church. He attended rural school and worked on the family farm. He later worked on farms in Montana.
On June 1, 1942, Art enter ed the U.S. Army, serving until his honorable discharge on October 18, 1945. During World War II he served in the European Theatre where he received four Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart and a Good Conduct Medal.
Following military service, Art returned to Thief River Falls and farmed in Pennington county. On July 17, 1953 he was united in marriage to Julia Sanders in Red Lake County. The couple has made their home in Thief River Falls.
He was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, VFW and Redeemer Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Art is survived by his wife, Julia; two daughters, Hazel (Kenneth) Cartier of East Grand Forks and Darlene Newland of Thief River Falls; 28 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Signe Green of Chicago, IL, Ruth (Norman) Leader of Thief River Falls and Anne (Gordon) Hoel of St. Paul; two brothers, Lynn (Laura) Stenseth of Florida and Maurice (Helen) Stenseth of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his children, Clarence H. Fuller and June E. Brandt; three grandchildren, Wynette, Thane and Gregory; three sisters, Lily Haynes, John Stenseth and Edith Herman; and three brothers, Ted, Lewis and Melvin Stenseth.
