Redondo Beach, CA - Esther Sorum, 93, formerly of Holt and Thief River Falls, died Thursday, November 12, 1998 at her home in Redondo Beach, CA.
A memorial service was held in Redondo Beach. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 at the Holt Cemetery with Reverend Tim Bauer officiating. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls.
Esther Sorum was born on October 1, 1905 in East Valley township of Marshall county, the daughter of John A. and Annie (Anderson) Sorum. As a girl, she attended Sunnyside School in rural Holt.
When her parents moved to Holt from the family farm in 1944 Esther remained with them and cared for them in their old age. She also worked as a telephone operator in Holt. After Esther's father died in 1953 she and her mother moved to Thief River Falls where they lived until her mother died in 1960. Esther moved to Redondo Beach, California where she worked as a home health care worker and aide. Esther was in her 70s when she retired. She remained active in the community by doing volunteer work for the city of Redondo Beach and the Salvation Army.
She was a skilled cook and seamstress.
Esther is survived by dozens of nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Roy, Art, Jessie, Bill and Andrew; and four sisters, Hazel Thorstad, Gladys Marrs, Alice Dahl and Bertha Gilbertson.
