Vernon Sorenson, 82
Thief River
Falls - Vernon Sorenson, 82, died Monday, November 15, 1999 at
his home in Silverton township of Pennington county.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 18 at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Dan Horn officiating. Elaine Idso will be the organist, and soloists will be Eric Sorenson and Solveig Swenson. Casketbearers will be Owen Scramstad, David Scramstad, Don Narverud, Clyde Christensen, Kent Christensen, Roger Hesse and Ron Lindberg. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, November 17) from 3 to 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Vernon Sorenson was born on May 26, 1917 in Oklee, the son of Thor and Bella (Vattendahl) Sorenson. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1935. Vernon worked at a lumber mill in Washington for two years. From November 1942 until 1944 during World War II, he served in the United States Army in Panama, France and Germany. His rank of Sergeant 4th Grade in the 63D Infantry "Blood and Fire" was held in the heavy artillery.
After Vernon returned from the service, he worked and learned beekeeping from Frank Cook. Vernon later owned his apiary and was a member of the Sioux Bee Honey Association. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion and Eagles. He enjoyed guns, owning an old muzzle loader that he shot on the fourth of July and used for hunting.
On May 2, 1942 Vernon was united in marriage to Bernice Woolson at the United Methodist Church. The couple resided in Thief River Falls until 1952 when they moved to the Woolson homestead in Silverton township of Pennington county. The couple purchased the farm in 1963 and built a new home there in 1974.
Vernon enjoyed hunting, summer and winter fishing, gardening, Bingo, Whist and dancing at the Heritage Community Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherry Lynn Sorenson and her friend, Darrel Mehrkens, of Thief River Falls and Marie Lee (George) Bregier of West Fargo, ND; two grandchildren; one brother, Edger (Joyce) Sorenson of Bloomington; one sister, Marjorie Loraas of Duluth; three sisters-in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.
Vernon was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice in 1987; one son, Allen in 1952; his parents; stepmother, Vera Darson; two brothers, Robert and Kenneth Sorenson; and three sisters, Pauline Mancini, his twin Elaine Wuorio, and infant Elaine. A00003B1999NV17
