River Falls - Esther Solseng, 90, died Saturday, December 23,
2000 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 29, at Oak Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls, with Rev. Zach Wilson officiating. Diane Waterworth will be the organist, and Gene Arveson will be the soloist. Casketbearers will be Don Dyrdal, Inar Mikkelson, Al Gjerde, Larry Martinson, Don Olson, Verner Arveson, Leslie Wilde and Marvin Bakken. Interment will be in Norden Cemetery in Norden township of Pennington county.
Visitation will be held for 4 to 8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service on Thursday, December 28 at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.
Esther Bakken was born on April 18, 1910 in North township of Pennington county, the daughter of Carl and Sina (Brakke) Bakken. She grew up and attended school in North township. Esther worked as a cook on numerous farms in North Dakota.
On November 8, 1933, she was united in marriage to Martin E. Solseng at McCanna, N.D. The couple lived and farmed in Hickory township of Pennington county. In 1943, they moved to Norden township where they continued to reside. Martin died in 1968. From 1971 until 1980, Esther worked in the packaging department at Hartz Warehouse.
She enjoyed quilting, gardening and crocheting, especially doilies.
Esther is survived by three sons, Martin (Louise) Solseng Jr. of Thief River Falls, Harold (Karin) Solseng of Kaiserslautern, Germany and Elton (Colleen) Solseng of West Fargo, N.D.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Olson of Keewatin and Erma (Fred) Wilde of Thief River Falls; a foster son, Daryl Lewis of Thief River Falls; special friend, Eleanor Joyce of Thief River Falls; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; parents; a brother, Alvin Bakken; and five sisters, Hannah Arveson, Jennie Sunsdahl, Selma Nash, Lila Martinson and Palma Strand. A00003B200DC27
